Fictional Character You’ve Connected With
A cartoon character I see a little of my own story in is Lilo from Lilo & Stitch.
When my Father left, my Mother did the best she could do. I touched a little on this at the end of one of my last few posts (HERE). My older sister did the best she could as well. I’m sure it was tough for her to become a sister/mother at the age of 12.
My social worker was not a ridiculously tall man, but a short woman. She had come to the house a few times to meet with my Mother and go over paperwork. The scene in Lilo & Stitch where Nani and Lilo are on the hammock talking really hit home. The first time I saw the movie, I stared when Nani starts to sing “Aloha Oe”, then I cried my eyes out.
I remember the talk my Mother and I had when she told me she couldn’t be the Mother she wanted to be. She told me she was very sorry for what was going to happen. She cried hysterically, making me cry, as she told me my sister and I would be going to live with someone else. She didn’t know what the future held or how often we would be able to see each other. She told me she was doing everything out of love to give me a chance and someday she hoped I would understand.
I watch the movie now and still shed a tear thinking back on it. As a parent now, I understand all too well the sacrifice she made..
